Announcement

Exodus 20: …

3 Do not have any other gods before me.   …

5 …. for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents, to the third and the fourth generation of those who reject me,

Wikipedia: Blasphemy is the disrespectful use of the name of one or more gods. It may include using sacred names as stress expletives without intention to pray or speak of sacred matters; it is also sometimes defined as language expressing disapproved beliefs, or disbelief. Sometimes blasphemy is used loosely to mean any profane language.

In a broader sense, blasphemy is irreverence toward something considered sacred or inviolable.

Definition of the award:

We are looking for artwork that takes supernatural (i.e. most religious) beliefs  for a ride - in a humorous and intelligent way - and is therefore able to undermine the exclusive authority claim (e.g. the 1st commandment) in order to support the freedom of our social society and art.

Admitted forms of art:

Any form of art is accepted, including performances, lyrics, pieces of music, drawings, cartoons, sculptures, plays, cabaret, short films, …

Basic conditions:

Short films, performances, compositions, cabaret and plays have to be delivered in digital format (CD, DVD) and should be approximate 5 minutes long. Lyrics and cartoons should also be readable within about 5 minutes.

Promoters:

Promoters could be academies of art, professional schools of graphics and design, art magazines, music – and drama schools, museums for caricatures, art cafes, and more.

However, we would appreciate it if any person reading this award  announcement could pass it on to other artists and interested persons, or hand over their contact data to the bfg München.

Intellectual property rights:

All intellectual property rights shall remain with the artists. Applicants give admission to the bfg München to use  their work without any charges or tolls, to show it at events of other non-profit secular organisations and to publish the work on the homepage www.frechermario.de. Names and contact data will be visible to the audience and the press if requested.

If any events requesting admission charge use these artworks as an essential element, 50% of the net profit shall be distributed to the artists whose artwork will be shown, distributed in equal shares. Any personal expenses will not be considered when calculating the net profit.

Closing date:

July 31st  2008

Submissions to  blasphemie@FrecherMario.org  or by mail:

bfg München,   Valleystraße 27, 81371 München, Germany.

Award ceremony:

The ceremony will take place on Friday, 10 October 2008 in the framework of the general assembly of   IBKA e.V. (held from 10 to 12 October 2008)  and at the event  „criticism of religion - censored – basic rights in the shadow of the gods“ in Munich.

Jury:

In addition to the financer of the basic hardware and the prize money, cartoonists, cabaret performers, other artists, authors, journalists, businessmen … will be asked to join the  jury. The members of the jury will be announced before the submission deadline.

Prize money:

We foresee to offer a prize money of at least EUR 3,000.

The prize committee will try to raise this sum through donations, and it will hopefully be supported by the promotional work of the secular associations HDP, Giordano Bruno Foundation and others.

Up to EUR 6.000 will be distributed to a maximum of 3 winners. Should we be able to raise a total sum higher than EUR 6.000, the rest will be carried over for next years´ award, “Frecher Mario 2009“ .

The winner of the announcement will receive at least 50% of the price money (i.e. at least € 1,500), the second prize will consist of 1/3 (at least € 1,000) and the third 1/6 (i.e. at least € 500).
